Managers share simple rules for better decision-making and team growth
Managers have the habit of creating simple rules or 'heuristics' based on their failures and sharing them with their teams and organizations, according to research by Radu Atanasiu, lecturer in management and organization at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Although managers learn simple rules for themselves based on insight and reflection, they use these rules less frequently than they would like. To address this problem, Atanasiu proposes two useful tools for practitioners, one for individual managers and one for their teams.
Price promotions don't necessarily lead to more food waste
Households that purchase fresh products in multi-buy packaging, such as two for the price of one, waste less food than regular buyers, according to joint research conducted by Marketing Professor Aylin Aydinli (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Arjen van Lin (Tilburg University), Erica van Herpen (Wageningen University), and Marco Bertini (ESADE Business School Barcelona). Additionally, households waste less food on average and take advantage of discounts more frequently. These surprising findings challenge the common belief that discounts lead to increased food waste. The study is the first of its kind to analyze both purchasing behavior and consumption patterns.
Integrated Reporting promotes sustainable decision-making within organizations
Organizations that report based on Integrated Reporting, a form of reporting in which organizations indicate how they create value in the long term, are more likely to make sustainable choices. This is shown by research conducted by Brigitte de Graaff, Assistant Professor of Accounting at VU Amsterdam. De Graaff also demonstrates that organizations engaged in Integrated Reporting more frequently take into account the social and environmental impacts in their decision-making, rather than solely focusing on financial aspects. Additionally, the sustainability of their performance is better monitored.
Industrial robots create labour market inequality
Robotisation reduces the wages and hours worked of people who can easily be replaced by robots, while increasing the wages of those who control the machines, according to new research by Professor of Urban Economics Hans Koster. Together with Daron Acemoglu (Professor of Macroeconomics at MIT) and Ceren Ozgen (Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Birmingham), he studied data from Dutch companies and workers.
How to deal with positive or negative experiences that change your career plans
Positive or negative experiences may change the career path that you have envisioned. These ‘career shocks’ happen to all of us, according to associate professor Jos Akkermans, and they might push you in a better direction.
'Politicians are rightfully now thinking more about public finances'
Last week, the Dutch House of Representatives debated the Spring note, an overview of the expenditures and revenues of the national government. Bas Jacobs, a professor of economics and public finance at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, closely followed the debate and shared his views on the television program EenVandaag.
Stories play a big role in the development of moral awareness in students
Reading and discussing world literature contributes to the moral development of business school students, whereby stories stimulate their moral imagination and empathy. This is shown by a research study conducted by organizational psychologist Inge Brokerhof (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) in collaboration with a team of researchers from Harvard University (USA), the University of Lincoln (UK), Utrecht University, and the University of Stavanger (Norway).
