Study Association Aureus
For the past two years, student association Aureus has contributed to Vuurwerk, the alumni magazine of the VU School of Business and Economics. This academic year, too, we are keen to share more about what’s happening within our association.
This edition's theme, Value versus Values, served as the starting point for this article. After all, what makes student life worthwhile? Every student will have a different answer to that question. For some, it is primarily the friendships and social activities, whilst others place greater value on academic enrichment, personal development or exploring opportunities for the future.
As a study association, our aim is to bring together different aspects of student life. This academic year, we are once again fully engaged in a range of projects and activities. From the Amsterdam Career Days and the Amsterdam Research Project to making Aureus more accessible to a wider group of students.
Preparations for the Amsterdam Career Days
The Amsterdam Career Days (ACD) is one of our biggest annual events. During this week, students have the opportunity to get to know various companies and organisations and to explore their options after graduation. For some students, this is their first introduction to the business world, whilst others are already actively looking for an internship, a traineeship or their first job.
This event is organised in collaboration with SEFA, the student association for Economics and Business students at the University of Amsterdam. By joining forces, we can offer students from both universities a broad and varied programme, whilst at the same time connecting companies with a large group of students.
Preparations for the upcoming edition are in full swing. The new organising committee is already busy approaching companies and putting together the programme. In doing so, we aim to offer as wide a range of opportunities as possible, so that students with different interests and academic backgrounds can get the most out of the week. That's why the value of the ACD lies not just in finding a first job. Talking to a company can also spark a new interest, give you a better understanding of a sector, or even help you realise that something isn’t right for you at all. By connecting students with different organisations, we hope to support them in making choices for their future.
Amsterdam Research Project in Brazil
Alongside career guidance, academic and personal development remain an important part of Aureus. The Amsterdam Research Project (ARP) is a perfect example of this. Every year, students are given the opportunity to conduct research into a relevant social and economic issue in an international setting.
This year, the ARP is heading to Brazil. The committee has now largely been formed and preparations for the project are in full swing. The coming period will focus, amongst other things, on selecting the consultants that will participate in the project and developing the various aspects of the research and the trip in more detail.
For the students, the project is more than just an academic experience. They get the chance to apply their knowledge outside the lecture theatre, collaborate on a joint research project and, at the same time, get to know a different culture and economy. This combination of academic enrichment, international experience and personal development is what makes the ARP a special part of Aureus year after year.
A student society for everyone
In addition to our major events, our focus this year is also on a development within the society itself: lowering the barriers for getting involved with Aureus.
That is why, this year, we are taking a critical look at the way students come into contact with Aureus and how we can lower the barriers to becoming a member or taking part in an activity as much as possible. We want students to feel welcome, regardless of how much time they have available, how active they wish to be, or where their interests lie.
We believe it is important that Aureus continues to represent different aspects of student life. Some come along to a drinks evening, a sports activity or a trip, whilst others prefer to delve into an academic topic, join a committee or attend a careers event.
These activities need not be mutually exclusive. It is the combination of social, academic, personal and career-focused activities that makes a student society so versatile
Looking back and looking ahead
The new academic year is now well under way and, as the 78th executive committee of Aureus, we are eagerly looking forward to what lies ahead. Preparations for the Amsterdam Career Days and the Amsterdam Research Project are in full swing, whilst at the same time we continue to work towards creating a society that is accessible to as wide a group of students as possible.
Besides these major projects, there are of course many more social, academic and career-focused activities on the agenda for the coming months. We look forward to working with our committees and members to create another year full of wonderful events, new experiences and special moments.
As the board, we are looking forward to the rest of the academic year and to everything that lies ahead! Warm regards,
The 78th Board of Aureus,
Vivien Hart (Chairwoman), Dennis Groeneveld (Commercial Officer & Vice-Chairman), Rosalie van der Vijver (Marketing Officer & Secretary), Anne Drabbe (Controller), Joey Lopez (HR Officer), Mirthe Chung (Career Officer), Giselle Bluemke (Innovation Officer), Koen de Wagt (Digital Systems Officer & CSR Officer)
